Community Service Sabbath this Sabbath on Orcas.  Dawn Parnell has several seniors requesting assistance with gardening, yard work and house work. Bring your hearts, your hands and your attitude of serving. Work gloves might be in order also! We will begin immediately following the fellowship potluck around 1:30 pm. For more information call Dawn at 376-4595.

FH Church Thanksgiving Feast will be Sabbath, November 21 after the church service.  Contact Barb at 298-0356 regarding the food sign up sheet.  Plan to join us and bring your family and friends along!

Family Game Night on Orcas is planned for Saturday, November 21 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm in the OCS gym (and behind the gym) with a harvest party theme.  For the kids, the two main components will be: 1) an outdoor game (flashlight tag or capture the flag), and 2) a fire in a portable fire pit behind the gym. Michele and Shelley are talking about popcorn and fruit smoothies - to be eaten in the lunch room or around the fire, but we might roast something on the campfire if you bring it.

Healthy Holiday Cooking:  Our next session will meet on Monday, November 23 at 6:00 pm in the OCS High School Cafeteria room.  For more information call Sally at 376-9017.

OCS K-1 Thanksgiving Play entitled "Give Thanks To God" will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 pm in the OCS Chapel.  You won't want to miss it!

While we enjoy plenty, let's remember the needy:
Read the Pastor's Message this week.

God Keeps His Promises -- So Should We
    (from Garden Psalms)
He gives food to those who fear him.
He remembers his agreement forever.
Psalm 111:5 NCV

Planting a garden is a commitment, as any gardener knows. From the first seed set in the ground and covered with dirt to its maturity. It is like an oath of commitment, a promise to care and tend to it through days, weeks and months. Water, fertilizer and weeding can only be supplied by the gardener at the right time and in the right amounts. And this means work! Planting is making a promise to care for the life we have started. Parents do this too, don't we?
"He remembers his agreement forever" means God keeps His promises that He has made because He has given us life and cares for us deeply.  He will nurture us because He wants us to flourish. We all have our own individual place in His garden and are tended to be useful and a cause of great joy to Him.
Like God, our word should be our bond. Once you have made a promise, fulfill it joyfully and with thanks, remembering that the Lord is unswerving in His commitment to us.
As we look ahead to reasons we are thankful this holiday season, let's re-commit ourselves to God. Asking Him to help us be receptive to His guidance. Receptive as in reading His Word. Taking care of what enters our minds and bodies. We can do our part too with His help!
I hope you have a wonderful week and God bless you!  - Barb

PARISH NURSE NOTES

Do You Have Diabetes Risk?

Could you have diabetes and not know it? There are 23.6 million children and adults in the US with diabetes -- and nearly 25% (or 5.7 million people) do not know it! There are several risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Some of them come from our family history and genetics and so are with us always, but some can be turned around to help reverse or prevent type 2 diabetes. Ninety% of people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Inactivity and being overweight go hand in hand towards a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Muscle cells have more insulin receptors than fat cells, so a person can decrease insulin resistance by exercising. Being more active also lowers blood sugar levels by helping insulin to be more effective. It's a win-win. Unhealthy eating contributes largely to obesity. Too much fat, not enough fiber, and too many simple carbohydrates all contribute to a diagnosis of diabetes. Eating right can turn the diagnosis around and reverse or prevent type 2 diabetes. If you have a family history of diabetes or have any of the risk factors, you should be tested for diabetes.

Live Gently and Be Blessed,
Sally Coffin, Parish Nurse
